REDUCING WASTE
With growing waste management needs, Yorkdale has been stepping up our efforts to reduce the amount of waste we generate.
Items such as cardboard, paper, bottles, cans and plastics are all recycled here at our Centre. Tenants are encouraged to participate in our recycling program and help manage the our waste stream.
Since 2002 Yorkdale has increased the recycling diversion rate by over 19%. Our long term goal is a diversion rate of 65-70%.
Yorkdale is equipped with 10 compactors for the disposal of waste and recycling goods. 96 gallon blue recycling totes are situated at each compactor area for the recycling of paper, bottles, cans and plastics. Tenants are supplied with blue bins for recyclable materials and have both a garbage and cardboard compactors conveniently located for their use.
Tenants are encoured to recycle several times throughout the year and reminded of the simple recycling tactic of the 3’rs.
THE 3 R'S
What are the 3-R’s? The first “R” and the most important, is simply to Reduce the quantity of waste produced.
The second “R” is Re-use or using an item again in its original form for the same or different purpose.
The third “R” is Recycle or the extraction and separation of waste materials at the source where it is first generated. By recycling, our natural resources can be used again and again.

- Reducing the volume of solid waste going to ever-increasing landfill sites.
It is Yorkdale’s goal to move closer to our diversion target. With new waste management methods and continued participation of the Centres tenants, Yorkdale will become even more environmentally friendly in the waste management field.
